scanbd is a scanner button daemon. It polls the scanner buttons looking for buttons pressed or function knob changes or other scanner events as paper inserts / removals and at the same time allows also scan-applications to access the scanners. If buttons are pressed, etc., various actions can be submitted (scan, copy, email, ...) via action scripts. The function knob values are passed to the action-scripts as well. Scan actions are also signaled via dbus. This can be useful for foreign applications. Scans can also be triggered via dbus from foreign applications. On platforms which support signaling of dynamic device insertion / removal (libudev, dbus, hal) scanbd supports this as well. scanbd can use all sane-backends or some special backends from the (old) scanbuttond project.
Supported platforms: Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD

User Reviews

  • For me, this project does a fantastic job. Combined with a lightwight computer like a raspberry pi it transforms old scanning devices into really helpful devices. In my case, without having a desktop computer running, I can do copies or have sent pdf files to my email address. With reference to negative ratings here: Scanbd is just a starting point. To get all this running, solid Linux knowledge is needed. Luckily, there are good ressources which help a lot, e.g. the Arch Linux Wiki. Just google 'scanbd'. Many thanks to all people involved in this project!
  • No matter what, the project's authors deserve my respect not only for making their solution free/libre and open source but trying to solve this minor but annoying issue with physical buttons of scanner not being functional in GNU+Linux. Thank you for your effort.

  • Please share actual instructions. I can not install this package under an raspberry pi!
  • To me, this project (like so many others) suffers from a lack of documentation. I'd really like to use it - but do not have any idea how. There are pretty old instructions how to make it work on ArchLinux - but that does not work for ubuntu. Please - dear creators of this project - write a few lines how to install and configure this package!
